Rocket booster pods
R2's leg, showing the opening where the deployable rocket booster pods will go. The rough booster tube is set in there for the picture. It will have swing arms similar to the JAG boosters made out of 1/8" ply and actuated by a small servo. The booster covers will be split vertically, to one side of the booster cover hydraulic cylinder and the two halves will swing open via a servo.
The idea is that R2 could do a little dance, playing music while flapping his booster covers and his booster pods. The booster pods will hold a small Estes model rocket engine each (A3), and a 32" plastic parachute. The A3's are decorative, but their ejection charge will deploy the chutes. The nice thing is that if I put motors with different ejection charge delays in the booster pods, I can have a "drogue" chute come out, followed later by a "main" chute at a lower altitude, which will prevent R2 from blowing away too far...
